Health coverage services

Guidance you can trust

Since the launch of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), more options than ever are available for healthcare coverage — but many still find the system difficult to understand. Our community health workers provide one-on-one support, helping people explore plans, compare benefits, and enroll in programs that fit their needs. These sessions last up to two and a half hours, offering time to discuss questions, review documents, and localize coverage options by ZIP code.

How the program began

A community-driven response to changing needs

Our health coverage program began in 2013, shortly after the ACA Marketplace opened, when many residents sought help understanding their new choices. Worry Free Community saw an opportunity to train immigrant community health workers to support their neighbors with health literacy, access, and enrollment. Over time, this effort expanded into a year-round service connecting people to Medicaid, Marketplace plans, and employer coverage guidance. The program continues to grow, with a focus on both education and empowerment.

Why this work matters

Addressing barriers to care

Many adults in low-income households remain uninsured, even when working full time. Immigrants, especially those new to the country, face unique challenges such as language barriers, unfamiliarity with the U.S. system, and ineligibility for certain programs. Rising healthcare costs add another layer of difficulty — in 2021, 64% of uninsured adults cited affordability as their main concern. Our team works to bridge these gaps by connecting families with programs that match their eligibility and financial situations.

Our impact

Expanding access to coverage

Over the past decade, our health coverage counselors have provided 8,471 one-on-one sessions, serving residents across 473 ZIP codes and collaborating with 30 mosque and community partners. Each conversation represents a step toward greater health literacy, financial stability, and community well-being. We continue to build partnerships that strengthen these outcomes and extend our reach across DuPage County and beyond.
